The United States Note 2 (in English: United States), note 3 officially the United States of America (in English: United States of America), 2 is a sovereign country constituted in federal constitutional republic composed of 50 states and a federal district. Most of the country is located in the center of North America - where its 48 contiguous states are located and Washington D.C., the district of the capital-, between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, borders Canada to the north and with Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent, bordering Canada to the east and separated from Russia to the west by the Bering Strait. The state of Hawaii is a Polynesian archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and is the only American state not found in America. The country also has several territories in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific.

With 9.83 million km² and more than 316 million inhabitants, the country is the fourth largest in total area, the fifth largest in contiguous area and the third largest in population. It is one of the most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations in the world, a product of large-scale immigration.10 It is, on the other hand, the world's largest national economy in nominal terms, with an estimated GDP of 15.7 billion dollars. (a quarter of the nominal global GDP) and a fifth of the global GDP in purchasing power parity.8 In GDP PPP was surpassed by China in 2014.11 The European Union has a bigger economy, but it is not a single nation.
