Curaçao or Curasao1 (Curaçao in Dutch pron.nl:/kugasao/ pron.pt:/kurasao/, Kòrsou in present-day Papiamento), officially the Country of Curaçao, is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands2 3 with an approximate area of 444 km². It is located in the south of the Caribbean Sea, about 50 km off the northwestern coast of Venezuela, and belongs to the group of the Sotavento Islands, together with its neighboring islands of Aruba and Bonaire. Until 2010 it was part of the Netherlands Antilles. Its capital and most populated locality is Willemstad, located in the south of the island.
